Rediscover the Family Road Trip

Unique Kids’ Adventures in Regional Victoria

Take the kids on a family road trip across regional Victoria! Discover hidden museums, hands-on experiences, and inspiring adventures they’ll never forget.

With today’s economic pressures, the cost of a week-long holiday—or even just a long weekend away—can be out of reach for many families. That’s why we’re seeing a huge resurgence of the good old family road trip (or even just a day trip) visitors to the museum.

There’s something special about loading the kids into the SUV and heading out into regional Victoria. The question is: what do we do, and what unique experiences can we have along the way? Families are looking for something different—niche, out-of-the-box adventures that inspire, motivate, and excite kids.

Heading West: Family Adventures in Victoria

Heading west from Melbourne is a great start. Ballarat offers some fantastic family attractions such as the Ballarat Wildlife Park and the iconic Sovereign Hill. Beyond that, you’ll find hidden gems managed by passionate volunteers across regional Victoria, including:

Each of these destinations offers a unique slice of history, creativity, and fun—and leaves a lasting imprint on children’s lives.

Inspiring the Next Generation

One story that touched my heart recently came from a young boy named Kieran, visiting from Bayside Melbourne. He and his family toured the Vegemite Museum, and a few weeks later they returned with big news. Kieran’s art teacher at St Leonard’s Primary School had encouraged him to enter the Young Archibald Prize in Sydney. His chosen subject? Me—in my everyday Vegemite-inspired outfit!

I was blown away. Kieran’s painting is a great reminder of the creativity and confidence that experiences like these can spark in young people.

Girl Guides at the Museum

Last week, the local Girl Guides, led by Sandra Watkins, asked if they could host their meeting at the museum. We started with a fun meet-and-greet, sharing stories about other young visitors and their special donations  that have become part of our museum’s history.

The girls then painted with Vegemite—giggling, experimenting, and focusing carefully on their creations. They asked wonderful questions about me and the museum, and we also spoke about the great value of volunteering. At one point, one of the girls asked, “What age can I come and work here?” My heart melted.

At the end of the visit, when asked what their favorite part was, one little girl answered: “Meeting you Liza.” Absolutely priceless.

Why These Moments Matter

These small but powerful moments show how a simple day trip can do more than entertain—it can inspire kids to think outside the box, dream big, and have a go. Families who take the time to visit these unique destinations are helping their children see the bigger picture beyond everyday life

So, why not seize the moment? Pack the car, take a road trip into regional Victoria, and discover the treasures waiting just down the road. You never know what kind of memories—or inspiration—you’ll bring home.
